FRENCH FAMILY PORTRAITS
For six generations, French Paper Company has been family-owned and operated. It remains one of the smallest, most innovative mills in the United States. They put one family first: their family of papers, all designed for easy--sometimes experimental--reproduction.
This piece tells the important story of the French family. It allows the viewing audience to get better acquainted with them via a uniquely drawn portrait, accompanied by descriptive text. As an added touch, there is a heartfelt "thank you" note from each family member on the back of every portrait. The goal of this effort was to emphasize that French has been family-owned and operated for nearly 150 years, while highlighting the print quality of the paper.
I intentionally wanted the cover art to be a bit more serious, yet still maintain a little humor so it didn't contrast too much with the inside artwork. To accomplish this, I created the crest with two French Bulldogs and used a sans serif type face.
Contained and stapled bound, the sheets were die-cut, scored, and perforated so they could be easily punched out of the book. When the tabs are inserted into the appropriate slots, they create a framed portrait.
The typeface on the front and back cover is used throughout the entire piece to create more cohesion. I illustrated the family portraits in a way that's both playful and aesthetically pleasing. Adding colorful shapes in the background helps the portraits really pop.
